A Week of Celebration and Reflection
Día de los Muertos is right around the corner, and it’s one of my very favorite times of the year here in Los Cabos. This vibrant holiday, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a beautiful blend of Mexico’s Catholic traditions and indigenous belief systems. It’s a time when we honor our ancestors and recognize the deep connection between the living and the spirit world. More than a solemn occasion, Día de los Muertos is a reminder not to take life or death too seriously. It celebrates the temporary nature of life and invites us to reflect on our loved ones with joy rather than sadness.

The symbology of this holiday is powerful and deeply meaningful. Papel picado, the delicate paper art often seen fluttering in the breeze, perfectly represents the fragility and beauty of life. Like life itself, these intricate decorations are beautiful but temporary, depicting scenes of life and death that are meant to dissolve back into the wind, just as we do.
One of the most iconic symbols of Día de los Muertos is the Catrina (skeleton figures dressed in elegant, often elaborate, costumes). These will be flooding the streets of Los Cabos during the celebrations, reminding us that death is not to be feared but embraced as part of the cycle of life.
Events: Dia de Muertos in Los Cabos
Los Cabos is embracing the spirit of this holiday with a full week of celebrations that blend the traditions of Día de los Muertos with the fun of Halloween. Starting on October 31st, Halloween is woven into the festivities, particularly downtown where children will be trick-or-treating, local businesses hand out candy, and the streets come alive with costumes. It’s a wonderful cultural meshing that happens here, as Halloween and Día de los Muertos meld into a celebration of life, death, and community.
Here are some of the must-see events happening this year:
Young Cabo Professionals Halloween Yacht Party – This exclusive event on Halloween night (October 31st) offers a stunning view of the Cabo San Lucas Marina from a luxury yacht. At $110 per person, this event promises to sell out fast, so grab your tickets early. It’s a perfect way to kick off the week’s festivities before diving into Día de los Muertos celebrations.
Cabo San Lucas Festivities – On November 2nd, the marina will light up with a boat parade honoring Día de los Muertos, and this year there will also be a Desfile de Catrinas (Catrina parade) and the first annual Mar de Ofrenda at Plaza Amelia Wilkes. On the water, expect to see boats decorated with ofrendas (altars), colorful lights, and music, creating a lively spectacle that reflects the energy of this celebration. Around downtown, you will see beautiful Catrinas and guapo Catrines, listen to the Los Cabos Orchestra, and enjoy delicious food and drinks.
Festival in San José del Cabo – On November 2nd, head to Plaza Mijares in San José del Cabo for a day of festivities. The plaza will host costume contests, traditional altars, and a chance to immerse yourself in the cultural beauty of the holiday. Locals and visitors alike will be dressed as Catrinas and Catrines.
Flora Farms Día de los Muertos Celebration – Flora Farms will once again host their annual event featuring beautiful ofrendas, costume contests, and live music. As always, this event sells out quickly, so be sure to secure your spot early. Find out more at https://www.flora-farms.com/
